Facebook's Chief Operating Officer (COO) Sheryl Sandberg has "touched a nerve" by suggesting women are responsible for holding themselves back in the workplace.
As Facebook's chief operating officer she is one of the most powerful and successful women in corporate America.
In her newly released book Lean In, which talks about women in the workplace, Sandberg blamed women for a lack of ambition and only being relevant to people who are rich.
In an interview with 60 Minutes in the US, Sandberg said women subconsciously shied away from leadership opportunities in anticipation of one day having a family, News.com.au reports.
According to the report, Sandberg also said that a bias against successful women is at the core of why women are held back, and why they hold themselves back. She pointed out that women attribute their success to working hard, luck and help from other people, but men attribute it to their own core skills.
