Candle Light Vigil at Hong Lim Park- Miss Shrusti Tripathy |
Singapore: Almost 200 people gathered at Hong Lim Park on Wednesday evening for a candlelight vigil to honour the Indian woman who was brutally gang raped in New Delhi last month. The victim succumbed to her injuries last week after she was transferred to Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore for further treatment. The gathering was organised by young social activists Shrusti Tripathy, a 21yr old student and Miss. Vanessa Ho.
“This candlelight vigil is, by definition a remembrance of others, to honour the Indian Woman, named by the media Amanat, Nirbhaya and Damini, who was gang raped and later, passed away due to her injuries. These names mean fearless lightning in trust. In the past week, there has been a global outcry over the brutality of the crime, as well as an awakening as to the pervasiveness of rape culture worldwide. Simultaneously, as we honour the death of this woman, we would also like to honour the many other victims whose crimes against them were not reported, who were blamed and shamed, who were thought to be lying, whose rape was not considered rape, and who were forgotten”, Miss Shrusti Tripathi said at the gathering.
The event was promoted through various social media networks. Several Indian and Singaporean nationals were present for this vigil including social activists from various women advocacy groups in Singapore.
“We call for justice for the victim, and hope India Government imposes stringent laws to punish rape crimes. We also suggest India government to include sex education for kids in school”, said John Lenin, a social activist & representative of social activist group in FB, “Kairali Singapore” at the candlelight vigil.
The participants sung poems, and displayed placards on stop rape crimes, and awareness. The crowd dispersed by 8:00PM after the silent prayers.
