An evening, 50 songs: Singapore’s Re-inKarnation heads to Dubai
Kaushik Suresh and his team, joined by Super Singer Ganesh Venkataraman, bring ‘Oru Maalai’ to Firdaus Studio with live mashups, familiar favourites and a new indie release.
DUBAI: The opening notes are often enough. Before the first line is sung, a familiar melody can bring back a film, a friendship or an entire season of life. At ‘Oru Maalai: Live in Dubai’, those moments of recognition will form the starting point for an evening of musical rediscovery.
Singapore-based Re-inKarnation will make its Dubai debut at Firdaus Studio, Expo City Dubai, on November 14, bringing a programme of more than 50 iconic Tamil songs, alongside a selection of Malayalam and Hindi favourites.
Following sold-out shows in Singapore and Chennai, the collective arrives with its distinctive approach to live mashups. Kaushik Suresh and his team will be joined by Vijay TV Super Singer Ganesh Venkataraman for the concert, presented by Neelamani Foundation and powered by Storeys.
Re-inKarnation’s appeal lies in the way it brings familiar songs together. Drawing on a ragam-based approach, the musicians explore melodic connections between numbers from different eras. For listeners, the pleasure is both in recognising a favourite and in hearing where the arrangement takes it next.
That sense of anticipation suits a repertoire stretching from the 1980s to the present. Across the decades, Tamil film songs have moved from cinema halls into homes, celebrations and everyday listening. ‘Oru Maalai’ gathers that shared repertoire into a live setting, where one generation’s cherished song may become another’s discovery.
A full live band and live DJ are part of the announced programme, with sing-along moments inviting the audience into the performance. The evening offers friends and families a chance to share their favourites — and perhaps find that they remember the same chorus for entirely different reasons.
Malayalam and Hindi selections extend that invitation beyond Tamil music enthusiasts, making the concert an appealing outing for groups whose playlists cross languages. The emphasis remains on the immediacy of live music: voices and instruments giving familiar melodies a fresh shape in the room.
Alongside the well-loved songs comes a first hearing. The organisers say Dubai audiences will be the first to hear Re-inKarnation’s forthcoming indie release, offering a glimpse of the collective’s original work as it takes its music to a new city.
For UAE listeners, the Dubai debut is an opportunity to encounter a Singapore ensemble whose performances place musical invention alongside audience participation. Those drawn to film melodies, unexpected song pairings and the pleasure of singing along will find much to look forward to.
