Singapore, September 2024 – In a landmark achievement for Singapore’s cricket community, the Sengkang Cricket Team has etched its name into the Guinness World Records. Recognized as the “largest cricket tournament played at a single venue,” this record-setting event, part of the Singapore Social Cricket League (SCL), spanned from July 13 to September 15, involving an impressive 102 teams, 286 matches, and 2,220 players. The accomplishment was celebrated in a ceremony graced by distinguished guests, including former Member of Parliament and Deputy Speaker, Mr. Charles Chong, and former Nominated MP, Mr. Viswa Sadasivan. Guinness World Records adjudicator Miss Sonia Ushirogochi, who oversaw the event, officially presented the award to the Sengkang Cricket team.

The tournament’s goal was more than just competition—it was a platform to promote racial harmony, integrate new immigrants, and foster bonding among Singapore’s diverse racial groups. The SCL Chairman, Shaji Philip, emphasized the broader vision behind the league. “This was not just about cricket. We wanted to provide an avenue for cricket enthusiasts from all walks of life, especially those residing in Sengkang, to come together. Moreover, we sought to introduce cricket to the local community and even to schools in the area,” Philip said.

Philip, a founding member of the Sengkang Cricket initiative and President of Kala Singapore, reflected on the team’s humble beginnings in 2007. “What started as a small group of cricket lovers has grown into something much larger and more significant,” Philip said. “It wasn’t an easy road, but with the unwavering support of our community and leaders like Mr. Chong, we’ve achieved something incredible today. This recognition is not just for the team but for everyone who has been part of our journey.”

The Sengkang Cricket team faced numerous challenges in its early years, including the need to constantly relocate due to rapid urban development. Philip credited Charles Chong for his crucial role in helping the group secure funding for field rentals and pitch preparations, enabling the team to continue growing despite obstacles.

The scale of the tournament caught international attention, with Guinness World Records officials meticulously verifying every aspect of the event. Adjudicator Sonia Ushirogochi explained, “Every record has its own set of guidelines. For this, we required video recordings of all the matches and witnesses to confirm that International Cricket Council (ICC) rules were being followed. We also reviewed the registration data of players and verified the scorecards to ensure everything was accurate.” Ushirogochi flew in from Tokyo to present the award, praising the organizers for their hard work in meeting the stringent requirements.

“This event is not only a proud moment for Sengkang but for all of Singapore,” said Chong during the ceremony. “We never imagined that a grassroots initiative would one day become a world record holder. This achievement speaks volumes about the dedication and community spirit here in Sengkang.”

The Singapore Social Cricket League, which began in 2013, provided a platform for both local residents and expatriates to engage with the sport, creating a melting pot of cultures through cricket. The league has since expanded, offering opportunities for players across Singapore to participate and promoting the sport in schools.

The record set by the SCL adds to Singapore’s growing cricketing legacy. The team previously secured recognition in the Singapore Book of Records, setting the stage for their ambitious Guinness World Record attempt. Philip attributed much of their success to key contributors like Hemasundar Ramachandra, co-founder of SCL, and dedicated coordinators such as Mr. Punit and Mr. Banu Kumar, who ensured the smooth running of the event.

“This is not just about breaking records; it’s about building a community. We’ve created a space where people from different backgrounds can come together to play and enjoy cricket, fostering inclusivity and unity,” Philip said.

The Sengkang Cricket team has also championed inclusivity by offering migrant workers the opportunity to play cricket at no cost. This initiative has been widely appreciated and reinforces the team’s mission to make cricket accessible to everyone in Singapore.

This Guinness World Record is expected to inspire future generations and boost the profile of cricket in Singapore. As Philip aptly concluded, “When a community unites with a shared goal, extraordinary things happen. This record is proof of that.”
